Churches Press Release on May 18th, 2011 on Section 53

PRESS RELEASE
BELIZE CITY, (May 18th, 2011) Recently, Christian leaders in Belize were made aware of a lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court by a homosexual advocacy group that seeks to abolish the laws against sodomy in this country. The advocacy group has been heavily influenced by foreign interests who seek to impose a worldview that directly contradicts the supremacy of God as reflected in our laws, challenges our national sovereignty, and threatens our very way of life, not least by targeting our children.
We, the undersigned leaders of the Catholic Church, Anglican Church and the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches last week applied to join the government in the case of Caleb Orozco & UNIBAM vs, The Attorney General of Belize to defend the laws of this nation, which reflect God’s law and promote human dignity and the common good. We declare that God is the author of all creation as our constitution affirms by recognizing the “supremacy of God.” Man is created in the image of God, and therefore has an inherent dignity and worth.
As the book of Genesis teaches us, God created Man male and female. He blessed them and said,”Be fruitful and multiply.” Men and women have different and unique sexual characteristics that complement each other and are naturally oriented towards marriage, family, and human flourishing.
Let us be clear what is at stake here. This lawsuit was filed to establish a new “right’ to engage in homosexual acts in Belize. In every country that has granted a new”right” to homosexual behavior, activists have promoted and steadily expanded this “right” to trump universally recognized rights to religious freedom and expression.
This homosexual agenda insists upon the promotion of homosexual acts in the schools and society, undermining the rights of parents as primary educators of their children and targeting even grammar school children under the guise of comprehensive sexual education programs that promote sodomy and immoral behavior. It also demands that same sex marriage must be recognized, and that no group may object to this agenda on religious or moral grounds.
Thus, we have jointly applied to the Supreme Court as “interested parties” representing the overwhelmingly broad majority of Christian Churches in Belize who do not support these initiatives of changing our laws to accommodate homosexual behavior. To this end, we have retained a prominent team of attorneys to defend this case, led by Rodwell Williams, SC and Eamon Courtenay, SC, and which includes Michel Chebat, Jackie Marshalleck and Christopher Coye. The people of Belize will not surrender our Constitution, our moral foundations, and our way of life to predatory foreign interests.
